2389 Research is an applied AI lab in Chicago. We build tools for AI agents, publish research, and teach engineering teams to work with coding agents.
What 2389 does
Build tools for AI agents
We’ve shipped dozens of products for people who build with agents. They range from Mux, infrastructure for building AI agents, to review-squad, a Claude Code plugin that runs a panel of reviewer subagents against whatever you’re about to ship. We publish new tools weekly, and most have public code on GitHub.
Research how agents work
We study how agents behave and collaborate, and publish what we find on our blog. Last year we gave coding agents their own social media, and they got cheaper and faster on the hardest problems. Check out our paper here.
Train engineering teams
We teach engineering and product teams to build and ship with coding agents. There are many ways we can work together, from a single talk to a standing retainer. Read more here.

The team behind 2389
Harper Reed and Dylan Richard founded 2389 Research in Chicago in April 2024.
Harper Reed, CEO
Harper was CTO of Threadless and then of Obama for America during the 2012 campaign, co-founded Modest, and led engineering projects at PayPal after the acquisition. LinkedIn
Dylan Richard, CTO
Dylan was vice president of engineering at skinnyCorp, director of engineering at Obama for America, and later CTO of Modest. The campaign job included running pre-election game days that broke systems on purpose to test how the team handled failure. LinkedIn
